A Unified Framework for Deep Symbolic Regression

Mikel Landajuela, Chak Shing Lee, Jiachen Yang et al.

What this work does

Combines recursive problem simplification, neural-guided search, large-scale pretraining, genetic programming and linear-model tokens in one modular symbolic-regression system.

Connection to discovery

A strong precedent for training a prior across problems and adapting search to a new discovery instance; useful for decomposing gains from model training and search harnesses.

Evidence

Inspected the unified algorithm, synthetic expression/data generation and the contrast between supervised and reward-based pretraining before instance-specific RL.

Scope and limitations

The modules and expression language are engineered and ground-truth reward is unavailable during instance fine-tuning. Hybrid gains require budget-matched component ablations; some PDF figure glyphs are poorly extracted.
