Towards Causal Representation Learning
What this work does
Connects structural causal models, independent mechanisms and sparse distribution changes to the problem of learning causal variables from low-level observations.
Connection to discovery
Makes variable construction and mechanism learning distinct research targets; the representation is part of the discovery problem.
Evidence
This is a perspective and research synthesis, with examples motivating modular representations and adaptation rather than one universally validated causal encoder.
Scope and limitations
A useful disentangled representation need not be causally identified. Additional environments, interventions or structural assumptions are required to distinguish equivalent latent explanations.
