The Causal Chambers: Real Physical Systems as a Testbed for AI Methodology
What this work does
Uses computer-controlled physical chambers with actuators and sensors to generate heterogeneous datasets and interventions over well-characterized systems.
Connection to discovery
A bridge between inexpensive synthetic discovery and controlled physical experimentation with known mechanisms.
Evidence
Case studies evaluate causal discovery, shifts, time series and symbolic models against explicit physical structure, rather than assuming simulated ground truth represents real sensors perfectly.
Scope and limitations
Recorded datasets, mechanistic simulators and remote live devices are separate usage modes. Access and experimental reset conditions must be checked for each live campaign; known physics does not make every measurement edge unambiguous.
