Discovering faster matrix multiplication algorithms with reinforcement learning
What this work does
An AlphaZero-style policy/value network guides tensor-decomposition search; training combines played games, synthetic factorization demonstrations and problem symmetries.
Connection to discovery
A direct discovery-RL precedent showing how to obtain valid synthetic training instances when generating solutions is easier than solving the forward problem.
Evidence
Inspected the exact zero-residual correctness condition, search/policy-improvement mechanics, algorithm ranks and hardware-tailored evaluation.
Scope and limitations
The factor alphabet, tensor representation and objective are designed in advance. Finite-field rank improvements must not be conflated with real-arithmetic or universal asymptotic improvements.
