Open-world Learning and Application to Product Classification
What this work does
Trains a class-independent meta-classifier over nearest examples, then recognizes enrolled classes and rejects unseen classes without retraining that meta-classifier for every class addition.
Connection to discovery
An early open-world knowledge-acquisition mechanism that makes recognition and incorporation of new categories explicit.
Evidence
Product-classification experiments vary enrolled classes, nearest-neighbor counts and voting rules; the body separates meta-training classes from incremental recognition classes.
Scope and limitations
Requires sufficient labeled examples and a supplied feature/ranking pipeline; category enrollment does not by itself establish new mechanism discovery.
