Deep symbolic regression: Recovering mathematical expressions from data via risk-seeking policy gradients
What this work does
An autoregressive recurrent policy emits expression trees and is optimized using the conditional reward of samples above a reward quantile.
Connection to discovery
Direct precedent for optimizing the best discovered result rather than average rollout reward; important when comparing discovery RL with ordinary task-solving RL.
Evidence
Inspected the risk-seeking objective/gradient and expression-recovery comparisons on Nguyen tasks, including cases with incomplete recovery.
Scope and limitations
The token library, expression constraints and synthetic task family restrict the hypothesis space; tail-focused training can lose diversity and does not replace independent validation.
