BioDiscoveryAgent: An AI Agent for Designing Genetic Perturbation Experiments

Yusuf Roohani, Andrew Lee, Qian Huang et al.

What this work does

Uses an LLM agent to select genetic perturbations in batches, incorporating prior observations and optional literature, critic and gene-search tools.

Connection to discovery

A concrete scientific evidence-acquisition workflow and a useful test of whether a harness component actually benefits a given policy.

Evidence

The body compares single-gene and gene-pair selection with ML baselines, and shows that extra tools help some underlying models while degrading others.

Scope and limitations

Historical-screen evaluation differs from a prospective experiment. Hit-rate gains and biological prior knowledge do not alone establish new causal mechanism discovery; effects of essential genes and prior exposure require controls.
